On Wednesday, March 23, fires continued to be recorded within zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Ukrainian rescuers can’t fight forest fires becuase of Russian militaries presence and military actions they started.

This was reported on the website of Ukrainian parliament, Verkhovna Rada.

“Probably, the fire broke out as a result of Russian armed aggression, might be because of the shelling or arson,” – said in statement by the Ukrainian parliament.

Experts note that according to the Classification of Emergencies, the criteria for fire in the exclusion zone should not exceed 0.05-0.2 sq. km. The current are covered in fire exceeds these figures in dozens of times.

“From the radiation risks point of view, recorded by the Automated Radiation Control System (ACMS), the main danger are fires in areas with significant levels of radionuclide contamination and at the location of radioactive waste management infrastructure within 10 km radius of Chornobyl nuclear power plant, – is said on Verkhovna Rada’s website.

At the same time, Ukraine told the IAEA that Emergency Services (SES) firefighters had tried to extinguish forest fires near the Chornobyl plant, though unsuccessfully, and that a slight increase in cesium concentrations in the air had been detected in Kyiv and at two NPP sites.

“In Kyiv and at two nuclear power plants, a slight increase in the concentration of cesium in the air was detected, but it does not cause serious concern in terms of radiation background,” the IAEA said.

On February 24, after a fierce battle, russian occupiers seized the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. In addition, yesterday the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management reported that the russian militaries had looted the Central Analytical Laboratory in Chornobyl which cost assesed at 6 million euros.
